The work recently carried out by William, Kate and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, touched upon topics which are also of keen interest to the Sussexes, according to royal commentator Daniela Elser. Last week, the Duchess of Cambridge visited RAF Brize Norton to meet civilians and military personnel involved in Operation Pitting.
This aid operation, the largest carried out by the British Army over the past seven decades, helped tens of thousands of people leaving Afghanistan following the return to power of the Taliban.
Camilla, who has been focusing much of her attention on raising awareness on domestic abuse and protecting victims over the past 16 years, hailed the “brave female journalists” in Afghanistan during a poignant speech last week.
William is gearing up for the first-ever award ceremony of the Earthshot Prize, his legacy-making initiative aiming to tackle the environmental crisis.
And last week he received the approval of the daughter of late US President John F Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy, who said the Prize was a “great tribute” to her father’s legacy.
The prize, inspired by President Kennedy’s Moon Shot, has also partnered up with the John F Kennedy Library Foundation.
Noting the Royal Family’s latest charity efforts and outings, Ms Elser, a royal commentator and journalist with more than 15 years of experience working with leading media titles, wrote in a comment piece for News.com.au: “So let me sum up: Over the last 10 days, and in quick succession, the Royal Family has aligned itself with racial justice, gender equality, support for Afghanistan, and has gotten the endorsement of the Democratic establishment in the US.”
Referring to Meghan and Harry, she continued: “Hmm, does this particular territory remind you of what some other titled, professional do-gooders have been up to?”
The expert went on claim the Firm has, whether by chance or through strategy, “managed to encroach on charitable territory that Harry and Meghan have been painstakingly staking out for years now”.
The expert made it clear she does not believe neither Meghan and Harry nor senior royals in the UK have exclusives rights on tackling major issues such as the current crisis in Afghanistan or climate change.
But, she went on to claim, recent royal engagements focused on issues also of interest for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex “potentially set the stage for a race to see who can come out on top”.
Before joining the Royal Family, Meghan was an advocate for gender equality and championed issues such as period poverty.
Harry is an army veteran who served two tours of Afghanistan. He has since championed veterans and military personnel through various initiatives.
Among these is the successful Invictus Games and HeadFIT, a platform designed to help personnel and veterans to be more proactive with maintaining mental and physical health.
Following their exit as senior royals, Harry and Meghan are carrying out most of their charitable efforts through their Archewell Foundation.
However, they have also taken part in initiatives – such as a donation drive hosted by charity Baby2Baby or the preparation of meal packages – as private individuals throughout 2020 and 2021.
Meghan and Prince Harry have spent the past few months quietly as a new family of four following the birth in June of their daughter Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana.
The only public event attended by the Duke of Sussex in recent weeks has been the GQ Men of the Year Awards, during which he presented the Heroes of the Year Award.
Similarly, Kate and William have only recently returned from a long summer break.
The Duke of Cambridge was the first to return to work two weeks ago, when he marked 999 Day and thanked emergency services for their continued efforts.
Kate’s visit to RAF Brize Norton marked her return into the public sphere since July 11, when she attended both the Wimbledon and EURO 2020 finals.
