The annual international men’s rugby union competition is set to kick off today with the current champions, Wales, taking on Ireland. Ahead of the tournament the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wished both the England Rugby and Welsh Rugby teams good luck.

Writing on Twitter, they wrote: “Here we go! #GuinessSixNations

“Wishing the best of luck to @WelshRugbyUnion, @EnglandRugby and to all nations as they kick off their campaigns today – looking forward to a fantastic tournament!”

However, their message sparked an argument online about which team the couple should be backing in the competition.

The argument was caused as Prince William is the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union while his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, is the patron of the English Rugby Union.

One person, known as A5_e_2, tweeted: “You should actually support Wales here.”

Another Twitter user, jstagrl1, wrote: “Ugh. I don’t know what I’m looking forward to most, Rugby season or watching these two compete!

“So fun! Can’t wait!”

A third Twitter user, known as getoffthecross1, tweeted: “Your Royal Highnesses, will you two be having healthy banter/competition/bets when England v Wales now?

“Like the loser of the bet has to do the laundry for a week?

“You’re magnificent for the country, never mind Rugby goals/tries, you’re so in love: pure relationship goals.”

Someone else, Adam Leyton, posted a gif urging the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to back Scotland – who will play against England this afternoon.

Princess Anne is the patron of the Scottish Rugby Union.

This week, the Duchess of Cambridge became the patron of English rugby taking the role that was previously held by Prince Harry.

Prince Harry handed back the honorary roles when he stepped down as a working member of the Royal Family.

The Duchess became the figurehead for both the Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League.

To mark her new role, Kate visited Twickenham and met players from England’s men’s and women’s rugby union international squads.

She went on to the pitch to join a skills session by head coach Eddie Jones.

Many people praised the decision to give patronage to the Duchess.

One person, Kayla Adams, tweeted: “Absolutely love that she’s been chosen, she has such a deep love for sports!”

With Jane adding; “What an inspiration the Duchess of Cambridge is to all young women.”

Kristine Froeba echoed: “Such a perfect choice, a sporty girl who excelled at team sports and continues to be an extremely athletic woman.

“Inspiring to young people and girls, and not just a figurehead, but also great on the field.”
