Kate ‘admired’ and praised for ‘setting an example to us all’ with her personal choices
Kate has been “setting an example” to everyone in the past years by happily recycling and wearing her outfits more than once, fashion experts have said. This year, A-listers and celebrities walking down the BAFTA’s red carpet have been asked by the London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainability to think about the environmental footprint of their wardrobe choices.
Issuing guidelines to all those attending the BAFTA ceremony tonight, the institute is asking to either re-wear something they already own or choose a more sustainable option.
And Kate, who will attend tonight’s ceremony alongside Prince William, the BAFTA’s President, has been praised for already following these environmentally-friendly tips.
Livia Firth, who together with her husband the actor Colin Firth has founded Eco-Age, an organisation advising brands on supply chains, raw materials and factories, expressed her hopes Kate would carry on with her habit to recycle and reuse expenses outfits tonight.
She told The Sunday Telegraph: “I have always admired her commitment to re-wearing and setting an example to all.
“Her voice is so powerful and it’s refreshing to see how she uses it for a variety of things including making a purposeful fashion choice.”
Similarly, Bethan Holt, fashion and culture writer, told the publication: “Wearing a dress three times might seem normal for the rest of us, but it’s seen as a statement when Kate does it.
“She has done this plenty of times with eveningwear, too.
“Last March, she attended a gala at the National Portrait Gallery wearing the same McQueen gown she’d worn to the BAFTAs in 2017 but with updated sleeve details.
“It gave the impression of having been thriftily upcycled although some people have suggested it’s a completely different dress as the floral pattern doesn’t line up in the same way – nevertheless, it was a clever message.”
When Kate doesn’t wear again one outfit she usually chooses designers famous for using sustainable sources.
Royal fans and fashion experts have also often claimed the Duchess of Cambridge was delivering messages with her outfits.
At the 2018 edition of the BAFTA, Kate chose to wear a green dress decorated with a black sash.
This choice was interpreted by many as a nod to Time’s Up, a movement born on that same year against sexual harassment, as the actors embracing it were wearing black garments or outfits on several red carpets.
The attention of royal watchers tonight won’t be only on Kate’s dress but also on Prince William’s speech, as the Duke of Cambridge is “concerned and disappointed” by the lack of diversity in the nomination of the four leading acting categories.
One source told The Sun: “He supports Bafta but is concerned and disappointed.
“He recognises there is so much talent in the industry so for all the nominations to be white again isn’t good enough.”
