Just Stop Oil activists rage as police finally clamp down on protests
Police confront Just Stop Oil activists in London
Just Stop Oil protestors are raging as police try to regain control of environmental activists blocking roads across London to ensure law and order across the capital city. Since April 24, Just Stop Oil has caused “significant disruption” on the streets of London, frustrating drivers and passengers trying to get around the capital during commuter rush hour. And in recent video footage, Met Police officers have been filmed ordering activists off of the roads.
Footage shows an officer ordering the protestors to get off the roads and onto pavements under Section 12 of the Public Order Act.
The video, uploaded by Just Stop Oil on May 1, shows police approaching the protestors. The officer said: “A Section 12 condition has been imposed on this march under the Public Order Act by Chief Inspector Scammell. The condition that has been put on the march is that you have to march on the pavement. If you don’t, people that are marching on the road will be liable for arrest.”
The protestor asks for the Bronze Commander, questioning how he will know Section 12 has been issued. The Police Officer reiterates the information including the name of the inspector who has authorised it, along with the time.
Pressed for further details, the officer added: “The order is you can protest. But you can only protest on the sidewalk.”
The video then cuts to Chief Inspector Scammell turning up at the scene adding there has been “significant disruption” from the march, after assessing cameras and TfL. He further adds the march must “proceed on the footway”.
The Public Order Act 1986 states that conditions can be imposed by police “as to the route of the procession or prohibiting it from entering any public place specified in the directions”.

In a further video uploaded to Just Stop Oil’s Twitter on May 2, two separate matches were “forcibly” removed from the road at Parliament Square onto the pavement under Section 12 of the Public Order Act, with officers guiding protestors off the streets.
In a press release issued on May 2, the activists said: “We will stop the campaign the moment the government halts licensing any new fossil fuel projects in the UK.”
A-level student marcher, Noah Crane, 18, from Norfolk said: “We have seen time and again that words are not sufficient to bring about necessary social change. The people who are both the most powerful and the most greedy in the world are making billions from selling our futures they aren’t going to stop just because we ask nicely.
“We have to demand it. If throughout all of human history, there has ever been a time to take action, it is now.”
55 supporters began marching from Regent Street and Parliament Square at 7.30am this morning and Just Stop Oil activists have been slow-marching every day since April 24. They continue to take action as they call for the Government to stop licensing new fossil fuel projects in the UK.
