Just Stop Oil activist: 'I’m ruining your commute because I have no future'
A Just Stop Oil activist who brought traffic to a standstill on the M25 has revealed why she ruined commuters’ Monday morning.
Louise Harris said she scaled a gantry over Britain’s busiest motorway ‘because I don’t have a future’.
The 24-year-old cried as she explained the reasons for her protest in a social media video, sobbing: ‘You might hate me for doing this and you’re entitled to hate me. But I wish you would direct all that anger and hatred at our government.
‘They are betraying young people like me. Why does it take young people like me, up on a f***ing gantry on the M25, to listen?’
Vegan Ms Harris, of Bedfordshire, is Cambridge university-educated and describes herself as a pop singer-songwriter on social media.
She compared herself to a prisoner of war after being pelted with drinks when she tied herself to goal posts during a Tottenham Hotspur-West Ham United Premier League game in March. That saw her being banned from attending matches for three years.
She was one of 23 people arrested during yesterday’s M25 protest – staged by eco-campaigners to demand No.10 halt all new oil and gas licences in the UK. Metropolitan Police Asst Comm Matt Twist described the protest group’s latest action as a ‘crime’. ‘This was a very significant and co-ordinated effort to cause massive disruption to the entirety of the M25,’ he added.
The Met has arrested nearly 700 activists and charged 111 during 32 days of protests since September.
