John Bercow: How ex-Speaker boasted about ‘exposing wasteful left’ in brutal CV

Mr Bercow, the former Speaker of the House of Commons, became a poster boy for Remainers as the Brexit impasse crippled the previous government. He attracted scorn from his own party as he appeared to sympathise with attempts to thwart the result of the 2016 referendum. However, a declassified copy of a CV he wrote at the age of 32 suggests he was once a lot more at ease with the Tory benches.

In the document, part of a series of papers released by the Cabinet Office to the National Archives, Mr Bercow portrayed himself as the nemesis of left-wing councillors in south London and also boasted of his tennis coaching qualification.

He claimed he had “exposed waste and corruption by the extreme left in control of the council” in Lambeth.

Mr Bercow added that he had “fought against left-wing policies, double standards and dirty tricks campaigns by Liberal Democrat councillors”.

His boasts did not stop there as he recalled how he had increased membership of the Essex University Conservative Association “from 60 to over 200” as a student in the Eighties.

Among his interests, he listed “squash, reading, swimming and cinema”.

Mr Bercow was applying to be a special adviser to the Chief Secretary of the Treasury in 1995 at the request of Ken Clarke, who was Chancellor at the time.

He had served on Lambeth Council from 1986 to 1990 and went on to be elected as the MP for Buckingham in 1997 before beginning a decade as Speaker in 2009.

Earlier this year, Express.co.uk unearthed Mr Bercow’s 1997 election leaflet, which hit out against the “rotten” EU.

It reads: “When we joined the EEC most people thought that it was to be a free-trade area of independent sovereign nations.

“Today the European Union interferes in far too many areas in our national life.

“I believe that we must get back to the original idea and stop the rot from Brussels.

“I am fundamentally opposed to abolishing the pound or to any moves towards a Federal Europe.

“I am also totally committed to a full referendum on Britain’s relationship with Europe.”

His parliamentary voting record before becoming Speaker in 2009 confirms what the election leaflet suggests, as Mr Bercow consistently voted against EU treaties and policies.

In 2007, he voted no on the European Communities Finance Bill.

In 2008, he voted in favour of a referendum requirement on the UK’s ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in the House of Commons.

In 2009, he voted yes on a Motion to reject the European Working Time Directive.
