Joey Barton: Fleetwood Town manager charged with ABH after post-match scuffle
Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton has been charged with causing actual bodily harm following a scuffle after a match against Barnsley in April.
Barton “emphatically denied” accusations that he confronted Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel in the tunnel after the League One match.
Stendel was left with facial injuries following a scuffle at the Oakwell Stadium.
In a statement, South Yorkshire Police said: “A man has been charged following an incident at Barnsley Football Club in April 2019.
“Joseph Barton, 36, has been charged with actual bodily harm contrary to section 47 assault and has been bailed to appear before Barnsley Magistrates Court on Wednesday 9 October 2019.
“On Saturday 13 April 2019, a man was left with facial injuries after an incident in the club tunnel around 5pm, following the conclusion of Barnsley’s match against Fleetwood Town.”
Barton was initially arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated offences and Sky Sports showed footage of police stepping in to stop him as he attempted to leave Oakwell.
Barnsley lodged a formal complaint with the FA and the Football League regarding Barton’s behaviour.
Sky Sports understands that Fleetwood Town are not expected to make any comment following the statement by South Yorkshire Police.
Barton is expected to be in charge of the team at Port Vale for Wednesday night’s pre-season friendly.
