Joe Biden rebuffs King Charles again by shelving plans for proper state visit
Joe Biden says 'God save The Queen' during speech
Joe Biden looks to have swerved a meeting with King Charles III for a second time following his no-show at the monarch’s Coronation.
The US President was conspicuous by his absence from the May celebrations but the White House indicated a proper state visit was on the cards – but this prospect has now been dashed with some confusion over if it was ever on the cards in the first place.
Instead, Biden’s next planned visit to the UK will be a whirlwind one with the president spending less than 24 hours in London necct month before continuing his European trip with a visit to Latvia, reports The Daily Express US.
A full state visit would typically last around four days and include the 82-gun salute and Buckingham Palace dinner afforded to Donald Trump in 2019 when he visited the late Queen Elizabeth II.
“There was never an invitation for a state visit,” a source in London told the Daily Mail. “The point was to try to get away from headlines about Biden snubbing Charles over the Coronation and show that the two had a decent relationship. And the White House managed to mess it up.”
Around the time of the Coronation, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre claimed Biden and Charles had spoken by phone and the King invited the president for a state visit.
She said: “Actually, during that call, the King offered for him to come and do a state visit, which the president accepted. And so they will see each other again very soon.”

However, an official record of that call didn’t mention anything about a state visit but instead said: “The president also conveyed his desire to meet with the King in the United Kingdom at a future date.”
A US official has confirmed Biden would meet with the royal during the whistlestop London visit and that British media had dubbed it a “mini-state visit”.
Biden is also expected to meet UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak when he visits in July.
