JJ Chalmers is an Invictus Games gold medalist in non-amputee cycling, having previously served with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan. He is also a close friend of Prince Harry, having met the Duke of Sussex as a result of his time serving for the military. After sustaining injuries in Afghanistan, he trained to compete in a triathlon, and was eventually persuaded by Harry to compete in the Invictus Games – an international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women founded by the royal.

It started a friendship between the two, and Chalmers has been supportive of Harry since he left royal duties in January 2020.

After Harry announced the news, Chalmers shed some light on the reasoning behind the Sussexes decision.

He told the BBC in February this year: “This was sort of laid out one year ago, and I don’t think too much has changed within that year except for the fact that, arguably, Harry, Meghan and Archie have become more settled as a family.

“That remains his number one priority. I suppose the sense of this is control. So much of his life, particularly the way it faces into the media, is out of his control.

“Any individual wants to take control of that. This decision and this circumstance will never change my view of him, particularly as a veteran.

“He had no need to pull on the uniform, he had no need to go to Afghanistan twice, and anybody who has had that level of service deserves a level of respect.

“I will continue to have the utmost respect for the service he has given so far and I’m hopeful he will continue to serve in a greater purpose.”

In 2020, Chalmers spoke of how his relationship with Harry had quickly blossomed before his marriage to Meghan, and how it had changed his life.

He said: “The idea that somehow my life has gone from that to this is so incredible. I will also be sitting there going, ‘Have a good day, mate’.

“I sit here thinking ‘Prince Harry’s my friend’. Every time I see him, I have fun. It’s going to be awesome, a cracking day.”

As well as being welcomed into Harry’s inner circle of close friends, Chalmers grew fond of his relationship with Meghan.

He continued: “She’s remarkable. He can share the burden with somebody, the good and the bad.”

On the Sussexes marriage, he added: “I’m just happy my friend is settling down with somebody.

“So many of our other friends are all settled down and have kids, so he needs to catch up.

“It’s fantastic to see that he’s been able to find someone, because I’ve been able to see what his life is like over the last four years and he works extremely hard, it’s very hectic.”
