Jeremy Corbyn PLEDGES SUPPORT to Donald Trump protestors – ‘This is an opportunity’

Mr Trump is in the UK for a state visit, which has split opinions across the country, with some criticising the decision to give the honour to the Republican leader. As one of the President’s biggest critics, Mr Corbyn has been among the most vocal in his opposition to Mr Trump’s tour of the UK. Giving his support to those protesting the President’s arrival in the UK, Mr Corbyn tweeted: “Tomorrow’s protest against Donald Trump’s state visit is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those he’s attacked in America, around the world and in our own country – including, just this morning, Sadiq Khan.”

The Labour leader’s reference to Sadiq Khan came after the London Mayor was the subject to a blistering attack by the US President on Twitter shortly before he arrived in the UK.

Mr Khan and Mr Trump have been locked in an ongoing war of words ever since the President’s election in 2016 and the Labour politician described the Leader of the Free World as a “20th century fascist” prior to his arrival in the UK.

Hitting back just minutes ahead of landing at London Stansted airport, Mr Trump wrote: “Sadiq Khan, who by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly “nasty” to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom.

“He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me.

“Kahn reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent Mayor of NYC, de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job – only half his height.

“In any event, I look forward to being a great friend to the United Kingdom, and am looking very much forward to my visit. Landing now!”

As well as giving his support to protests against the state visit, Mr Corbyn has come under criticism for snubbing the official state banquet.

This evening, representatives from both the UK and Uthe US will join the Queen for the traditional banquet at Buckingham Palace.

However, Mr Corbyn has rejected his invitation.

The decision has been described by Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt as “disgraceful anti-Americanism” which threatens to “harm the national interest by throwing away our relationship with our closest ally”.

The Labour leader is not the only politician from his party to snub the President.

Emily Thornberry, Diane Abbott and Dawn Butler are all expected to join protestors marching from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square tomorrow.

Mr Trump, his wife Melania, as the rest to the travelling US delegation will be in the UK until Wednesday.

The US President has a packed schedule for his time in the country.

As well as the state banquet this evening, he will also be holding meetings with Theresa May and have a private lunch with the Royal Family.

He is also due to lay a wreath the Grave of the Unknown Soldier to mark the memorial of the D-Day landings.
