Jeremy Corbyn insists Boris Johnson cannot ‘be trusted’ as he pledges new Brexit vote
Jeremy Corbyn said MPs “cannot trust” Boris Johnson not to break the law and take Britain out of the European Union without a formal agreement. The Labour leader spearheaded efforts to put in place a new law that would force the Prime Minister to request an extension to the Brexit deadline to avoid a no deal scenario. Mr Corbyn insisted Parliament will not agree to a general election unless the British Government either struck a deal or took off no deal completely off the table.
Addressing supporters in Northampton, Mr Corbyn said: “Let me address him directly. Prime Minister, we can’t trust you not to break the law because you’ve got form.
“We can’t trust you not to use this period for an election campaign to drive our country off a no deal cliff edge that will crash our economy, destroy our job and industries, create shortages of medicines and food supplies, and endanger the peace process in Northern Ireland and damage the Good Friday Agreement.
“It’s simple – obey the law, take no deal off the table and then let’s have the election.”
He added: “We’re ready and champing at the bit. There’s only one reason it hasn’t happened yet – we can’t trust you.”
