The Amazon founder is among numerous wealthy entrepreneurs including Evan Zimmermann to have collectively invested £230m into Altos Labs. Since securing the cash, the start-up has been busy recruiting scientists to head up its labs across the planet including in the UK.

A source linked to Altos Labs has revealed that the firm is looking at opening a UK base in the Cambridgeshire village of Milton – where the Cambridge Science Park is located.

It is closely linked with the world-leading university and describes itself as Europe’s “oldest and most successful science park”.

Unlike previous programmes which have focused on tackling diseases and ailments, Atos Labs will solely seek to discover ways of keeping the body and all of its organs healthy.

It will do this by focusing on “rejuvenating the body at a cellular level”.

Manuel Serrano is from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine, in Barcelona and plans to join an Altos Labs facility in the UK.

Mr Serrano did not comment on the proposed lab’s location but said its philosophy is to do “curiosity-driven research”.

He added: “In this case, through a private company, we have the freedom to be bold and explore.

“The aim is to understand rejuvenation.

“I would say the idea of having revenue in the future is there, but it’s not the immediate goal.”

David Sinclair is a researcher at Harvard University who last December reported restoring sight to mice using the cellular technique.

He said: “There are hundreds of millions of dollars being raised by investors to invest in reprogramming, specifically aimed at rejuvenating parts or all of the human body.

“What else can you do that can reverse the age of the body?

“In my lab we are ticking off the major organs and tissues, for instance, skin, muscle and brain – to see which we can rejuvenate.”

And while the concept may seem farfetched, the growth of the ageing-delaying industry has boomed in recent years.

Altos Labs also has the benefit of established investors who have form for picking winners.

Mr Zimmerman invested in pharmaceutical firm Moderna before it developed its Covid vaccine last year.

It has since been used in countries across the world – including in the UK – returning the American investor hefty profits – according to reports.
