James Bond: 007 producer says ‘door open’ to black Bond but not a woman

Producer Barbara Broccoli said last year that the superspy role would “probably” not be a woman. But at the Bond 25 launch in Jamaica this week, she said she would rather make separate female action films.

She said: “I’m very much interested in making films about women, created for women; and not doing some sort of stunt casting by turning Bond into a woman.”

The 25th 007 film will be Daniel Craig’s last, Broccoli said, adding that the door “would be wide open” to a black Bond – many have tipped Luther actor Idris Elba for the role.

Bond 25 is set in Jamaica, the location used for Dr No, the first 007 film, in 1962. Stars include Bohemian Rhapsody Oscar-winner Rami Malek, Londoner and Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch and Game Night’s Billy Magnussen.

Malek hinted he may play a villain, saying: “I will be making sure Mr Bond does not have an easy ride in this, his 25th outing.”

Cary Joji Fukunaga, known for the 2015 film Beasts Of No Nation, will direct and Fleabag writer and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge has also been brought in to work on the script.

The plot introduces a Bond “who has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica”.

Production is based at the UK’s Pinewood Studios, with additional locations in London, as well as Italy, Jamaica and Norway.
