Jail let-off for ‘sorry’ Sir Tom statue vandal
Madeleine Budd, 21, has apologised and been handed a suspended 21-week sentence.
The statue, in Hatton, Derbyshire, celebrates late wartime veteran Sir Tom who raised £33million for the NHS before his 100th birthday.
Budd, who lives in a caravan, emptied her chemical toilet over the life-sized silhouette.
During the eco protest last month she wore a T-shirt with an “End UK private jets” slogan. Footage online sparked outrage.
Budd, of Kington, Herefordshire, admitted £200 of criminal damage. She had spent three weeks in custody.
Katie McFadden, defending, told Westminster magistrates: “She has clearly reflected on the impact of her actions and expressed how she is sorry for any offence caused to the family of Captain Tom.”
District Judge Louisa Cieciora said: “Given your actions could not, or have not, achieved what you wanted them to and you want to find a better way to express your message, I am just about persuaded I can suspend your sentence.”
