The leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg, is one of the most recognisable people in British politics. The Cabinet Minister has been at the heart of Brexit since the very beginning and has become something of a cult figure. He is known in the House of Commons as “the member for the 18th Century” due to his upper class mannerisms and traditional attitudes.
In a recent podcast, though, Mr Rees-Mogg admitted being at fault just like any other father.
Discussing how he and his family coped with lockdown, he told Jack Blanchard: “I have been very lucky because I had my work to go into and Parliament has been sitting.
“I also recognise my good fortune… in Somerset we have a garden so the children have had somewhere to play.
“But I think home-schooling has been difficult for all families.
“It was fine last summer, when it was new and exciting and it was nice weather.
“My children got pretty bored in January and February and were excited to get back.
“The burden fell on my wife as I was in Parliament, I think she was quite pleased, too.”
Mr Blanchard then noted: “I am struggling to imagine the Rees-Mogg children parked in front of a PlayStation for hours on end…”
The Leader of the House of Commons chuckled before admitting: “If only you were right…
“I am afraid the image and the reality on this don’t match.
“I was sitting at home over the weekend and all of my children, including the three-year-old, were on electronic items of one kind or another.
“I am afraid I am just as much a failure as a father in this respect as most of my fellow citizens.”

When asked if he also plays video games, Mr Rees-Mogg added on POLITICO’s Westminster Insider Podcast: “Very occasionally, yes.
“I am not very good at any of them.
“Crossy road is the one my three-year-old was having a go at.
“He is already better than I am.”
In 2017, the MP for East Somerset announced the birth of his sixth child, who he gave the eccentric name Sixtus.
Despite having such a large brood, he revealed he had never changed a nappy.
He said the reason for this is because he is not a “modern man”.

The MP told former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage on LBC: “The nanny does it brilliantly.
“I’ve made no pretence to be a modern man at all, ever.
“I’m probably as modern as you.”
He did not say whether his wife changed nappies.
Mr Rees-Mogg added: “I don’t think nanny would approve because I’m sure she’d think I wouldn’t do it properly.
“This is the nanny that has worked for my family – in September, 52 years – so she knows a thing or two about doing it properly.”
