Jacob Rees-Mogg savaged by Winston Churchill’s grandson over Brexit – ‘An absolute fraud’

Mr Soames lost the Conservative Party whip on September 3 after voting to allow backbenchers to take seize control over the House of Commons order paper.

This was done so a law blocking any no deal EU exit on October 31, as Boris Johnson has pledged, could be passed.

In total 21 Conservative MPs had the whip removed, including former Chancellors Philip Hammond and Ken Clarke.

Speaking to The Times Sir Nicholas launched a fiery assault on Jacob Rees-Mogg, currently the leader of the House of Commons.

Attacking the Government Minister he said: “He is in serious danger of believing his own shtick.

“He is an absolute fraud, he is a living example of what a moderately cut double-breasted suit and a decent tie can do with an ultra-posh voice.

Mr Rees-Mogg was appointed as leader of the House of Commons by Mr Johnson after he became Prime Minister in July.

Prior to that he was chair of the fervently pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG).

On Wednesday pictures emerged of Mr Rees-Mogg partially lying down on a House of Commons bench during an emergency debate.

Sir Nicholas, who campaigned for Remain ahead of the 2016 Brexit vote, described Mr Rees-Mogg’s actions as “repulsive”.

He added: “I thought it was bloody bad manners and he of all people should know better.

“He has had all the advantages and frankly nanny made a serious bish.

“I wanted to kick him firmly in the arse and say, ‘What the hell do you think you are playing at? Sit up!’”

Sir Nicholas went on to term Mr Rees-Mogg’s behaviour “the lowest form of student union hackery, insolence and bad manners”.

Mr Rees-Mogg was forced to apologise earlier this week after comparing NHS consultant David Nicholl, who worked on the Government’s no deal Brexit plans, to disgraced anti-vaccine former doctor Andrew Wakefield.

Speaking in the Commons Mr Rees-Mogg had commented: “I am afraid it seems to me that Dr David Nicholl is as irresponsible as Dr Wakefield, in threatening that people will die because we leave the European Union.”

On Monday the House of Commons voted to allow backbench MPs to take over the Parliamentary timetable.

This allowed a new law to be voted through on Tuesday, blocking any no deal Brexit on October 31 without Parliament’s approval.

In response Mr Johnson called for a General Election, accusing his opponents of seeking to block the UK’s EU exit.

However opposition parties have agreed to oppose any new public vote until the official Brexit day has been extended beyond October 31.

Under the terms of the Fixed Term Parliament Act the Prime Minister needs the support of two thirds of MPs to launch a General Election.

Mr Johnson struck out at Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, describing him as a “chlorinated chicken”.

On Friday the bill blocking a no deal Brexit before October 31 passed the House of Lords, and is expected to receive royal assent on Monday making it law.
