‘I’ve been getting gel nails all my life.. but now I can barely move my hands’

A woman who had her nails done on a regular basis for many years claims that she is now hardly able to use her hands. Lisa Dewey was concerned that she would lose a finger because, following a manicure, she developed an apparent allergy. Lisa initially believed she had a bacterial infection as a result of the swelling and separation of her gel nails from the nail bed.

But then one of her fingers went purple, while the others grew painfully itching.

To treat the issue, an antibiotic and steroid cream were provided to her. Lisa, however, felt agony again after having acrylic nails applied last month.

She told Manchester Evening News: “I’ve been getting my nails done all my life for acrylics or gels. When it first happened after a set of gels in February, I thought it was a bacterial infection.

“My nail bed even started going purple and I worried I would lose the whole finger. When I had them done again recently – this time acrylics – the same thing happened.”

“Now my skin is like paper tearing away from my fingers and I can barely move my hands from the pain.”

The cleaner for the National Health Service (NHS) in Northamptonshire claims that the woman has trouble carrying out basic duties including washing her daughter’s hair, buckling a seatbelt, handling a pen, and doing the dishes.

Lisa had no issues getting her nails done for many years, but she can no longer get gel or acrylic nails because she believes she has an allergy to them.

The issue came unexpectedly, and Lisa, a mother of two girls who are 12 and three, said she was concerned she would lose a finger when her nail turned purple.

Lisa said that the problem arose suddenly and that she was afraid she might lose a finger when her nail turned purple.

She said: “I feared it might be starved of oxygen – but it ended up being something completely different.”

“Washing my daughter’s hair is hard because you have to bend your fingers.

“Even strapping her in the car – if I catch my finger on the belt, I jolt from the pain because the skin is raw.”

She added: “”It gets so aggravated but wearing gloves doesn’t even help because sweaty hands aggravate it too.

“Anything scented or fragranced makes it worse – I can’t put a conditioning treatment or mousse in my hair.”

Lisa continued: “This has knocked my confidence so much – I don’t normally care what people think of me, but now I hide my hands away.

“It’s just embarrassing to have hands like this.”
