Prince Philip died on Friday, April 9, just two months away from his 100th birthday. His death triggered an outpouring of grief around the world, with tributes and never-before-seen pictures posted by Royal Family members. Philip’s funeral will take place on Saturday, April 17 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

Television coverage will show the service as it happens, including a rather unique procession from Windsor Castle to the church on a specially designed Land Rover.

Members of the Royal Family will also follow behind the Land Rover in procession, however, the Queen will make her own way to the service.

The ceremony will begin at 3pm, with a national minute of silence as Philip’s coffin makes its way inside.

Typically royal funerals see crowds gather to pay their respects, however, due to coronavirus fans have been told to watch the ceremony at home instead.

What will happen on the day?

At 2.40pm on Saturday, Prince Philip’s coffin will be carried out onto the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle from the private chapel where he has been resting.

The coffin will be placed onto a modified Land Rover, which Philip helped to design.

The procession – led by the Grenadier Guards – will begin at 2.45pm and will be flanked by pallbearers from the Royal Marines and other regiments and corps Prince Philip is associated with.

Royal Family members will follow behind, however, the Queen will go on separately to the service.

At 2.53pm the Land Rover will arrive at St George’s Chapel, met by a guard of honour and a band from the Rifles Regiment, playing the national anthem.

The coffin will be carried up the steps to a nautical call called “the Still” played by a Royal Navy piping party.

At 3pm a national minute of silence will be pay tribute to Prince Philip, the service will then begin.

Who will attend Prince Philip’s funeral?

Just 30 people can attend the funeral due to coronavirus restrictions, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson opting not to be there to allow a family member to take his place.

Prince Philip’s four children are all expected to attend, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

Their partners will also likely be in attendance.

The Queen and Philip’s eight grandchildren are also expected on the guest list, perhaps joined by their partners.

Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge are expected to be at the ceremony.

Prince Harry has made the journey from the United States to attend his grandfather’s funeral, however, will not be joined by his wife Meghan Markle.

Meghan is expecting her second child with Prince Harry and has been advised by her doctor not to travel.

Philip’s great-grandchildren are not expected to attend, with the eldest being just 10-years-old.
