‘It’s offensive!’ BBC presenter wants to ‘ban’ Fairytale of New York
The BBC radio presenter took to social media to announce he would no longer be playing the “offensive” Christmas tune and reaffirmed his position live on air. Alex Dyke, the DJ for BBC Solent, said he wasn’t comfortable with playing the song, which he refers to as an “offensive pile of downmarket chav bilge”. But many have hit out at the radio presenter, accusing him of ruining Christmas and branding him a “snowflake” and “PC fool”.
In a tweet that has since been deleted, the DJ said: “Radio, let’s ban ‘Fairytale of New York’ this Christmas!
“‘You’re a sl*t on junk, you scumbag, cheap lousy f****t’ – is this what we want our kids singing in the back of the car?
“It’s an offensive pile of downmarket chav bilge. We can do better!”
On his radio show, Mr Dyke further explained to his listeners that he would not be playing the track this festive season.
He said: “I hope I’m not going to ruin your Christmas, but I’ve decided that I am no longer comfortable with playing Fairytale of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.
“I think Christmas songs should be about excited children, toys, Christmas trees, snowy streets, ski lodges, reindeer, wrapping paper, Santa, family, peace on earth and love.
“I just find The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York a nasty, nasty song.
“I think it should be banned, I really do, so I won’t be playing this record on the radio this Christmas.”

He added that by not playing the song, he was “making a stand for the good of the people”.
But social media users have reacted to the news with fury, with many branding the DJ a “snowflake” – an insult for someone who is perceived to be too sensitive.
One person wrote: “Fairytale of New York banned by BBC presenter after he called it ‘offensive bilge’.
“Alex Dyke stop trying to save us. Utter utter PC fool.”
Another said: “BBC DJ Alex Dyke (never heard of him), this flake wants to ban The Pogues/Kirsty Maccoll Fairy Tale of New York. Personally I would ban him!!”
A third wrote: “Didn’t realise Alex Dyke was such a snowflake.”
Others agreed that the presenter should be banned, as one person said: “Take him off the air. It’s not what the wants to play. It’s what the audience want to hear.”
One person even accused the DJ of ruining Christmas and said: “Not wanting to play Fairy Tale of New York because it’s ‘offensive’. People trying to take what joy of Christmas is left.”
A BBC spokesperson said they wouldn’t actually be banning the song from their playlists.
They said: “This was Alex’s decision. There is no ban. We have a strict music policy that we expect to be followed.”
