Conservative MP John Redwood insisted the BBC does not lean towards Labour or the Tories. But the Brexiteer claimed there is a “systematic bias” against England, adding that it is underrepresented compared to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In a letter on his website to the BBC’s new director-general Tim Davie, Mr Redwood said: “I do not think the BBC reveal party political bias between Labour and the Conservatives.

“The interviewers are usually rightly tough on both parties.

“There is however systematic bias against England, with many voices representing Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and liberal reporting of the devolved governments with never any consideration of the views of England where most Licence fee payers live.

“There is no English radio or tv channel to redress the balance, unlike the other nations in the Union which have their own channels.”

The Tory MP added that “no-one is ever allowed to speak for England”.

He said: “We are endlessly told Scotland voted to stay in the EU but never told England voted decisively to leave.

“The BBC follows the EU agenda of trying to break England into regional and city area governments, whilst leaving Scotland whole despite the anti Edinburgh tensions in places like the Shetlands and the differences between the Highlands and the main cities.”

Express.co.uk has contacted the BBC for comment.

Mr Redwood’s remarks come after the broadcaster told staff not to bring the corporation “into disrepute” in new rules over social media use.

The social media rules are part of a new set of instructions and guidance, alongside training, that aim to “ensure the highest possible standards of impartiality across the organisation”.

Mr Davie warned BBC staff over their use of social media in September.

He said: “If you want to be an opinionated columnist or a partisan campaigner on social media, then that is a valid choice – but you should not be working at the BBC.”

The BBC is also set to introduce a Parliament-style register of outside earnings for staff taking part in public speaking commitments or other public appearances.

It comes as the broadcaster has faced criticism in recent months amid a series of controversies.

The BBC sparked anger when the universal free TV licence for pensioners was axed in August.

Under the changes, over-75s must now receive pension credit to get a free TV licences.

The corporation also prompted a furious reaction over plans to drop the words to Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory at the Last Night of the Proms in September.

The BBC was forced to make a humiliating U-turn following the backlash.

The campaign group Defund the BBC has gathered almost 100,000 followers on Twitter since it was launched in June.
