This weekend is the second in May UK workers have had to enjoy some extended days off, with another bank holiday on the horizon. Current lockdown advice may impact the way everyone spends the day, however, with varying policies in place across the home nations.

Is Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?

Every May, people in the UK are treated to two bank holidays.

The first “May Day” bank holiday fell on May 8 this month, moved from a Monday to a Friday to celebrate VE Day.

The second is the spring bank holiday, which comes tomorrow on May 25.

The forthcoming bank holiday is for everyone in the UK, including England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

While the whole country shares the date tomorrow, Scotland has an additional bank holiday in August.

Scots will have the day off work to celebrate St Andrews Day on August 3.

While the other regions won’t celebrate with a day off, they still have the Summer bank holiday on August 31.

Here is Scotland’s full forthcoming bank holiday schedule:

• May 25: Monday, Spring bank holiday
• August 3: Monday, Summer bank holiday
• November 30: Monday, St Andrew’s Day
• December 25: Friday, Christmas Day
• December 28: Monday, Boxing Day (substitute day)

While the majority of Scotland’s bank holiday dates align with the rest of the country, their coronavirus policy doesn’t.

Current advice from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is for Scottish residents to stay indoors on the bank holiday.

People will need to continue on Scotland’s lockdown plan for weeks more, as officials strive to blunt the impact of COVID-19 in the region.

The first easing of current measures won’t take place until May 28, when the Scottish government is permitting residents to meet with friends and family outdoors under social distancing measures.

Until then, people will need to remain indoors wherever possible, only travelling close to their homes or for essential work.

The situation isn’t the same in England, where recent easements introduced by Boris Johnson permits people to enjoy “unlimited exercise”.

The Prime Minister has allowed people to venture outdoors whenever they like, and people can also meet with one friend at a time while maintaining distance.

They may also travel as far as they wish, but councils have warned against visiting the UK’s beauty spots as they may make social distancing difficult.
