Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey has cast a spotlight on the inner workings of the Royal Family and the reasons behind the couple’s decision to leave senior royal life behind. The US TV host said the full interview ran to three hours and 20 minutes, with the most important question she wanted an answer to being “why did they leave”.
Harry revealed things had become “desperate”, saying: “I went to all the places which I thought I should go to, to ask for help. We both did.”
He added: “My biggest concern was history repeating itself and I’ve said that before on numerous occasions, very publicly.
“And what I was seeing was history repeating itself. But more, perhaps. Or definitely far more dangerous because then you add race in and you add social media in.
“And when I’m talking about history repeating itself, I’m talking about my . . . my mother.”
Pushing for more information, Oprah asked what the simplest answer to why they left was, to which he said: “Lack of support and lack of understanding.”
Asked if his family were aware of his plans, Harry said: “I never blindsided my grandmother, I have too much respect for her.”
He went on to say he had three conversations with the Queen – and two conversations with Prince Charles, who asked his son to put their plan into writing.
Harry did so, penning his and Megan’s proposals for stepping back, including adding a date on which they hoped to exit.
But Harry then admitted that his father “stopped taking my calls.”
Speaking about his relationship with his father since his exit, he said: “There’s a lot to work through there. I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like, and Archie’s his grandson.
“At the same time I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened.
“I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship, but they only know what they know.”

Is Harry still a prince?
As the grandson of the Queen, Harry has retained his title as a prince even though he is no longer a senior working member of the Royal Family.
Royals do not have to be working members of the family to have a prince or princess title, as demonstrated by Prince Andrew’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
Additionally, both Harry and Meghan have been allowed to keep their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex respectively.
The titles were given to the pair on their wedding day in 2018 and they can continue to use them, but it was agreed they will no longer use their His and Her Royal Highness (HRH) styles.
It was confirmed in February that the pair would be stepping down for good, with the Queen issuing a statement to say they would no longer “continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service”.
This means Harry must return his honorary military appointments and royal patronages – a huge blow to the prince.
Asked if he still wanted to serve the Queen, he said: “Yeah, we didn’t want to . . . we didn’t want to give up, or we didn’t want to turn our backs on the associations and the people that we’ve been supporting.”
