‘Irresponsible’ gambling advert featuring fluffy animals banned for ‘appeal’ to children
Regulators have ordered the removal of an “irresponsible” gambling advert following a complaint that it appealed to children.
The Gala Spins advert, featuring five fluffy toy animals, has breached guidelines about betting companies targeting young people, according to The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA).
The eight-second advert was a paid-for Facebook post on a page only available to adult eyes, but the ASA deemed this insufficient protection for children, as users on the social media platform can submit their own age.
The regulator said that the video caption referring to “fluffy favourite” toy animals as a “rollercoaster of cuteness” would draw children towards it.
In a statement, the ASA said: “Gambling ads must not be likely to be of particular appeal to children or young persons, especially by reflecting or being associated with youth culture.
“We considered that the ad was likely to be of particular appeal to under-18s and therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible and breached the Code.”
The company LC International Ltd – trading as Gala Spins – said it posted the video in error and that its intended audience was women aged between 18 to 65 who are interested in gambling.
It said it has since removed the advert from its channels.
