iPhone’s emergency SOS feature saves couple whose car went off a cliff

Apple’s Emergency SOS feature is proving to be a literal lifesaver as it helps people stranded in yet another accident.

On Wednesday afternoon, the police in Crescenta Valley, California received a call from the Apple emergency satellite service where the caller and another victim had been involved in a ‘single vehicle accident’.

The vehicle had gone off the side of the mountain at ‘approximately 300’ on the Angeles Forest Highway and tumbled into a narrow valley.

While the victims were able to extricate themselves from the car, they were in a remote canyon with no cellular phone service.

‘Using the emergency satellite service on their iPhone 14, they were able to communicate to a relay center via text,’ tweeted the Montrose Search and Rescue Team.

The rescue team was able to locate the victims, a male and female in their 20s, who had mild to moderate injuries. They were hoisted out of the canyon with a helicopter and transported to a local hospital.

Earlier this month, the iPhone’s emergency SOS via satellite feature helped save a stranded man in Alaska.

The new safety feature on the iPhone 14 allows users to contact emergency services using satellite connectivity even when no cellular or WiFi connection is available.

The Emergency SOS via Satellite feature is designed to ask several questions ahead of when an alert is sent out to expedite rescue missions.

The message goes to a relay service, which then passes it on to the appropriate authorities — in this case, the LA County fire department, sheriffs, and the rescue team in Montrose.

In November, Apple rolled out the SOS feature on all models of the iPhone 14, for customers in the US and Canada.

Just this week, Emergency SOS via satellite was rolled out on the iPhone 14 lineup in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. Support for more countries is due to follow next year.

The service is free for two years starting at the time of activation of a new iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple has not yet provided details about how much it will cost going forward.
