Inside the jail where Lucy Letby will live side-by-side with UK’s most depraved

Nurse Lucy Letby could spend the rest of her life alongside Britain’s most disturbed murderers in a prison that looks like a uni hall, it has been reported.

At HMP Low Newton in Durham, where serial child killer Letby is likely to serve her life order, inmates have the chance to pet baby animals, decorate their prison cells and go shopping.

The high-security Category A female prison is home to Joanna Dennehy, who killed three men within ten days in 2013 and was given a whole-life order.

Other past inmates at the prison include depraved women such as Rose West – dubbed the Cromwell Street killer, and Baby P’s mother Tracey Connolley.

An inspection of the prison stated that the “cells were not well equipped with only a bed, toilet and sink.”

It added:  “The regime was limited with only an hour a day in the open air and half an hour to complete daily tasks, such as showering.”

But pictures of the general population prison show a cell with storage space and a neat library with hundreds of books and a handful of computer desks.

Prisoners also have a Rags to Riches shop which is stocked with well-known fashion brands. Items ranging from flip flops, shirts and pants are reportedly on offer.

The top security prison even lets the serial killers who live there pet sheep and goats and tend to rabbits and birds in a bid to keep them “calm”. The Independent Monitoring Boards, a group dedicated to the humane treatment of prisoners, revealed the scheme in a report last year.

HMP Newton is next door to HMP Frankland, dubbed Monster Mansion, where Sarah Everard’s killer Wayne Couzens lives alongside Levi Bellfield and Ian Huntley.

Around 340 prisoners are currently residing in the prison, living in mostly single cells, although there are also three-person cells.

Letby, 33, was dubbed a “coward” by Rishi Sunak for failing to dock while the families of the victims read impact statements at Manchester Crown Court.

She is the fourth female in the UK to receive a whole life sentence.
