Kate, Duchess of Cambridge has always been a sports lover. But recently the royal has been outspoken in her love for tennis. As the Duchess steps out onto centre court today to play a friendly match against US Open Champion, Emma Raducanu, Express.co.uk looks into the Duchess’s love for the sport.

The Duchess of Cambridge seemed delighted to meet the newly crowned queen of tennis, Emma Raducanu, at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton today.

The 18-year-old is the first British woman to win a tennis grand slam title in 44 years.

The Duchess welcomed Emma Raducanu home by playing a friendly doubles match with the star.

Before the match, the Duchess congratulated Joe Salisbury, Emma Raducanu and wheelchair tennis players Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid on their recent successes at the US Open. 

She said: “Amazing guys, honestly, congratulations to all of you – it’s seriously impressive.”

The Duchess had previously reached out to the young tennis star to congratulate her on her recent Grand Slam win.

Following the teen’s incredible triumph, Kate tweeted a rare personal saying: “Huge congratulations @EmmaRaducanu on your stunning performances and historic Grand Slam victory!

“Incredible – we are all so proud of you. @leylahfernandez well done on your amazing achievements at this year’s #USOpen, it’s been a pleasure to watch. C”

Kate is frequently seen at England’s home of tennis, Wimbledon, as she is patron of the Lawn Tennis Association.

Every year Kate hands out the tennis trophies to the champions at Wimbledon.

But her passion for the sport extends far beyond her role as Patron of the Lawn Tennis Association.

She is frequently seen watching matches from the royal box at Wimbledon in a private capacity.

The Duchess is known to be a keen tennis player herself.

It is one of the ways the Duchess reportedly keeps in shape.

Her love of the sport seems to hark back to her school days, where she was a keen sportswoman.

The Duchess even had a tennis court built on the grounds of her family home, Anmer Hall, Norfolk.

No doubt she will be keen to pass on her love of the sport to her three children.

A royal source told the Sun that Kate encourages her children to play tennis after school.

The royal insider said: “Once their school work from Thomas’s Battersea has been dealt with satisfactorily, both George and Charlotte enjoy tennis lessons on their green court.”

They added: “Kate plays almost daily with the children and they like their practice sessions with her.”
