Infuriated caller in rant demanding ‘untrustworthy’ Shamima Begum ‘stays in Syria’

Shamima Begum begged to be let back into Britain despite the Home Office earlier this year stripping her of her British citizen for her association with terrorist group Isis. British-born Begum fled the UK in 2015 to join Islamic State fighters and later married a Dutch jihadist before she was located in a Jordanian refugee camp in Syria. But Jeremy Vine on 5 caller Eileen went on a furious rant about the prospect of the Isis bride returning to Britain, demanding she stays in Syria.

The South Yorkshire local said: “She should definitely not come back.

“I think half of Manchester would be up in arms if she were to set foot back in this country.”

Eileen said Shamima Begum “cannot be trusted” to head back to the UK after her three-year stay in Isis-controlled territories.

She continued: “Why can’t she go back to Pakistan? She’s had to take off from there so she can go back to her father, who is in Pakistan.”

TV host Jeremy Vine pointed out Begum has family relations in Bangladesh rather than Pakistan, adding Bangladeshi officials already turned out her request to travel to Dhaka.

Eileen added: “I rest my case.

“If they won’t have her back there, I don’t want her back here.”

Begum was 15 when she left London with schoolmates Amira Abase and Kadiza Sultana – the group is known together as the Bethnal Green trio due to their attending Bethnal Green Academy in East London – to join Isis.

Shortly after her arrival in Syria, Begum married Dutch-born Islam convert Yago Riedijk with whom she went on to have three children, the eldest of whom died before Begum relocated to the refugee camp in 2019.

Her youngest, a son, was born in the camp but was later reported to have died in March 2019 due to an infection.

Home Secretary Priti Patel denied Begum’s request to be allowed back into the country after her predecessor, Sajid Javid, stripped her of her citizenship in the Spring.

Ms Patel said: “No way, no way. Our job is to keep our country safe.

“We don’t need people who have done harm and left our country to be part of a death cult and to perpetuate that ideology.

“In terms of security and intelligence, I am simply not willing to allow anybody who has been an active supporter or campaigner for IS in this country.”

A Whitehall source claimed Boris Johnson faced a Cabinet mutiny after he failed to get enough support for wanting to collect 30 British children from camps in Syria.

The Prime Minister had reportedly wanted to bring under-16s back to the country, but leave their parents in the Middle East.

The issue was debated at a National Security Meeting weeks ago but the row was leaked at the weekend.

Intelligence sources claimed the families of suspect jihadists discussed bribing guards to smuggle their relatives out of Syria.

The Government has refused to take Britons back over fears of there not being enough evidence to convict them in the UK.

Instead of allowing their return, the Home Office stripped jihadists of their British citizenships.
