Infected MP Nadine Dorries says mum, 84, also has coronavirus
The first UK MP to contract coronavirus says her elderly mum has also tested positive for the deadly disease.
Health minister Nadine Dorries was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Tuesday and has been in self-isolation ever since. She said having the illness was ‘rubbish’ but that she was ‘more worried’ about her 84-year-old mum, who had developed a cough.
Today her fears were confirmed as her parent was diagnosed with the airborne disease, which is especially deadly for elderly people and those with pre-existing health conditition. This evening the Tory health minister said her mum Sylvia Dall was a ‘pre-war baby’ who was ‘made of strong stuff’ and said she was ‘doing ok’.
So far 11 people have died from coronavirus in the UK, with the total number of infections jumping by 208 to 798 today.
Fellow health minister Edward Argar and Labour MP Rachel Maskell are also self-isolating after coming into contact with Ms Dorries.
Boris Johnson has also recently attented a Downing Street event with the Mid Bedfordshire MP but there are no plans to test the Prime Minister, who has shown no coronavirus symptoms.
Despite receiving plenty of heartfelt messages of support about her mum, Ms Dorries became embroilled in a row with the wife of fellow Tory MP Andrew Bridgen.
Nevena Bridgen launched a scatching attack against her on Twitter, accusing her of leaving their young son ‘jeprodised’ by not revealing her diagnosis sooner.
Her husband is currently self-isolating because he came into contact with Ms Dorries in the House of Commons last week.
Mrs Bridgen wrote: ‘Why did you not tell them that you sit next to my husband Andrew Bridgen on Thursday in a tea room and that he can’t get the test now!
‘I have the baby and a 75 years old mother jeopardised. You were treated but no one is coming to help us!’
The Serbia-born musician even ‘liked’ a tweet calling for the infected MP to be arrested.
But Ms Dorries told her she didn’t sit next to Mr Bridgen who was on another table not close to her in the tea room.
She added: ‘He text me and told me he had sat next to me, I was too ill to discuss but not sick enough not to know, that wasn’t true. I told him if he was worried, to call 111.’
