Incredible pictures show Harvest moon rising across the UK
The Harvest moon looked pretty good in the UK skies yesterday night.
Pictures taken across the country showed the Harvest moon in all its glory as it orbited around Earth at its furthest distance.
This year it took place on Friday 13th, which made it even spookier.
The Harvest Moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs closest to the September equinox each year.
It happens when the moon is located on the opposite side of Earth from the sun, fully illuminating it.
This one was a ‘micromoon’ due to being about 14% smaller in the sky than an average full moon.
The last time it happened on Friday 13th was in the year 2000 and it won’t happen again until 2049.
The name of ‘Harvest Moon’ was given to it because it happened during the time of year when corn was harvested and brought in.
The Full Corn Moon, which it’s referred to as sometimes, signals the start of a new season – the onset of autumn.
The next full moon after the Harvest Moon is the Hunters Moon which will take place on October 13.
