Locals are in a stink about the plans for a new fish and chip shop only three doors down from Canterbury Cathedral’s iconic Christchurch Gate entrance, as the “cooking odours wafting in the area” would bother visitors, they claim.

Take-away eaterie Seafarer, the brains behind the controversial idea, assures the business will not have a negative impact on the cathedral’s surroundings or the wider city.

Its planning application states: “Internally, there will be the installation of cooking equipment and preparation/washing areas, but all these items will be subtle in nature and easily reversible.

“It is anticipated that the extraction system installed will ensure no disturbance, nuisance, or loss of amenity to nearby premises as a result of any odour or noise.”

Bad smell is people’s key concern.

Resident Robert Wilson argued: “It would be impossible to eliminate the smell of fish entirely.

“There are several fish and chip shops in Canterbury where the smell of fish pervades their location.

“One wonders about the logic in adding another takeaway to an already crowded market, particularly right next door to the Cathedral.”

Angela Whitfield wrote: “The cooking odours wafting in the area would not leave a good lasting impression and would not be in keeping with the neighbourhood.”

Seafarer, which already runs a chippie in the nearby coastal town of Broadstairs, believes they can contain the fishy smell.

However, residents are resistant to the opening, which they think will not contribute aesthetically to Canterbury, one of Britain’s Heritage Cities, either.

Canterbury Cathedral, a symbol of the UK’s history, artistry and religious thinking, has been the seat of the spiritual head of the Church of England for nearly five centuries – and a huge attraction to Canterbury’s 7.8 million annual visitors.

Ms Whitfield added in her objection to the council: “This outlet would be located right next to one of the most iconic features of Canterbury, namely the Cathedral gate, which is a key component of visitor photographic evidence of their trip.”

The new venue will be open from 11am to 11pm every day. It will count with four staff members and have four tables at the rear for diners.

The building that will host the new shop, which was home to Warrens Bakery from 2019 to 2020, is Grade II-listed.

The team said: “Our proposal is to leave the building untouched save for some small redecoration works to the shop front, which will include redecoration for branding purposes and painted signage.

Canterbury Cathedral has not made any official representations to the council about the application and did not wish to comment on the project.
