Earlier today Sir David Amess was stabbed in major incident while meeting members of his constituency in Leigh-on-Sea. The Conservative MP, who represents Southend West in Essex, was attacked at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, where a knifeman is understood to have walked into the church before carrying out the vicious assault.

Constituents waiting to see him and staff were among those who witnessed the incident and quickly called police who rushed to the scene.

The area surrounding the church, which is located on Eastwood Road North in Leigh-on-sea, has been closed while police respond to the attack.

Areas between Bellhouse Lane and Oakwood Avenue are affected by the closure.

Olivia, an employee at Jeans Laundrette located on the same road as the church, told Express.co.uk: “I’m trapped in at the minute. The road is on lockdown and my car is where the police are so I can’t get through.”

Other onlookers posted about their experience at the scene online.

One person posted: “David Amess Southend MP stabbed in Belfairs Methodist church Eastwood road literally as I was outside the building.”

While another posted: “Something big going on outside Belfairs Methodist Church on Eastwood Road North near the Woodcutters.”

In a statement released earlier today, Essex Police said: “We were called to reports of a stabbing in Eastwood Road North, Leigh-on-Sea shortly after 12.05pm today.

“Officers were on scene shortly after, arrested a man and recovered a knife. He is currently in custody.

“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the wider public.

“We want to thank the public who alerted us to the incident so quickly.”
