IDS admits Boris Johnson under pressure from Brexit Party – ‘They have destroyed politics’

Boris Johnson supporter Iain Duncan Smith told Good Morning Britain the Brexit Party was breathing down the necks of the Tories and Labour. He added Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party had “destroyed politics” as we know it due to the anger felt by voters across the country. GMB’s Ben Shephard began by saying: “The Guardian reads Tory rebels warn Johnson, ditch no deal or face fight for survival.

“We know there is an awful lot of uncertainty, lots of Cabinet Ministers saying they are going to step down before they are pushed.

“And actually Boris is going to fight very hard as soon as he comes into the position as leader.

“Particularly the thing that everyone is scared of is the idea that he is going to turn around and say we are going to leave on the 31st of October with no deal, can you see that happening Iain?”

Iain Duncan Smith replied: “I can see it happening if it has to be.

JUST IN: Boris Johnson’s first job in No 10 will be to prepare for nuclear armageddon

“As he said and I’ve always said is that I would much prefer to have an arrangement with the EU is beneficial to both sides.

“What is absolutely clear now is that things have changed since the 29th of March.

“The idea that we can have this long extension where we stay in doesn’t happen.

“The Brexit Party, as you will see in the by-election, are breathing down the necks of both the major parties.

“They have completely destroyed politics as we know it at the moment.

“Our failure to leave at the 29th of March has created this bow wave of anger and we have to settle it.”

The Good Morning Britain co-host snapped: “Well you are not going to be able to, are you?

“Because you have got, just as Boris Johnson and Brexiteers were causing problems for Theresa May, the maths didn’t add up when she was trying to get that deal through.

“You have now got people who are very against no deal and maybe still Remainers at heart who are going to be there causing problems.

“It is already tight, there is a by-election next week, the Tories are in second place at that.

“That means you would have a majority of one, how is it even possible for you to get anything through.”

Mr Iain Duncan Smith quickly replied: “It is law that we leave on the 31st of October, that is statute, that is law.

“If nothing else happens we leave on the 31st of October deal or no deal.

“The only question therefore is, one kind of arrangement do we try and achieve with the European Union prior to that.”

Boris Johnson was announced as the new leader of the Conservative Party.

Tory rival Jeremy Hunt received 46, 656 votes whereas Boris received 92, 153 votes.
