Former Conservative Party leader and Brexiteer Sir Iain Duncan Smith insisted the UK had many options in the works for future Brexit trade deals. While appearing on the Emma Barnett Show with Naga Munchetty, Sir Iain rubbished claims the UK needed either China or US to survive after ties are fully cut with the EU. He claimed countries around the world were very interested in trading with the UK and Britain would not have to bow down to the US or China to become an international success.

Ms Munchetty read out comments from listeners and said: “If we can’t afford to maintain trade with China, then cancel Brexit.

“All we have left is subservience to the United States.”

Sir Iain firmly dismissed these claims and argued why the UK could still thrive post-Brexit.

He said: “No, there is a whole world out there of nations that are keen to improve their business with the UK.

“I was just talking about India, it has a huge economy and massively intelligent people that are highly educated.

“They want to be able to do greater business with us like loads of other countries.

“Countries like, Australia and New Zealand, America is but one of them.

“There are lots of reasons why doing free trade deals is good but it doesn’t limit your ability to do trade with countries.”

Sir Iain went into greater detail of how the UK and China’s relationship would likely change.

He continued: “With China, I am simply saying this Government is an intolerant, dictatorial regime that is suppressing the Uighurs and people in Hong Kong.

“China has already said it wants to be the largest economic and military power in the world by 2040.”

Ms Munchetty interrupted to question whether the UK could expect major changes to our imported manufactured goods if tensions remain with China.

She said: “Do you envision a time when we will be looking at the goods in our homes and they won’t be saying made in China?

“Will our manufacturing industry be strong enough to support ourselves?”

Sir Iain closed by replying: “That is exactly the point we want to make, a balance in all these things.

“We rushed to get so much of this done and made and with it, through different Governments, we trashed our own capabilities.”
