The political commentator forecast further outbreaks of COVID-19 across the UK following a local lockdown being placed on Leicester. Mr Dale told Express.co.uk both Spain and Australia are experiencing local coronavirus outbreaks and the UK Government should plan for similar scenarios.

Mr Dale said: “I think there will be other outbreaks in areas other than Leicester.

“It could well be that there are some others, we have seen it happen in other European countries.

“It is happening in Spain a lot at the moment, it is happening in Australia so there is no reason to think that we will be immune from that.

“The test and trace system has really got to crack into gear.

“It is operational, I think it is working to a large extent, but it is certainly not a kind of world beating system that we were promised all those weeks ago.”

Leicester was placed into lockdown on June 29 following a surge of coronavirus cases in the city.

On July 16, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced Leicester would remain in lockdown for another two weeks but that some restrictions would be eased.
