Hurricane Idalia makes landfall in Florida

Hurricane Idalia has made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast as a devastating Category 3 storm.

Idalia struck the continental United States around 8.00am on Wednesday, after spending days gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

‘Destructive life-threatening winds will occur where the core of Idalia moves onshore in the Big Bend region of Florida,’ the National Hurricane Center said.

They also warned of catastrophic storm surges and destructive waves along the coast, with ocean water flooding up to 16 feet above the ground level.

On the Saffir-Simpson Scale, Category 3 hurricane can sustain wind speeds of 111-129 miles per hour.

Overnight, Idalia continued to gain strength, briefly becoming a Category 4 storm before being downgraded again around 7.00am.
