Hunt for killer dogs nicknamed ‘lethal weapons’ after fatal attack
Two missing dogs, described as “lethal weapons” are nowhere to be found after attacking a man and mauling a family pug to death in Newcastle. Retired doorman, Keith Heslop, was left fearing for his life when another dogwalker approached him with two dogs in Elswick, Newcastle. The animals began attacking him and his daughter’s pugs leaving him “traumatised”.
The 66-year-old says one of the dogs held his pug, Gus, by the throat and killed him in the terrifying attack. He managed to place the other pug, Rosie, safely inside his car, without her sustaining any injuries.
Speaking to the Chronicle Live, Mr Heslop says he feared for his life, was knocked off his feet, and suffered bite injuries to his leg. He said: “I had literally just stepped out my front gate and I was ambushed by these two dogs. Gus spent 10 minutes in the jaw of these dogs. I wouldn’t have been able to help him. They had him by the throat.”
Mr Heslop said: “I was a doorman for 40 years and I have been in some dodgy situations in Newcastle over the years, but I have never been as frightened as this.”

Mr Heslop added: “These dogs are lethal weapons. It doesn’t bear thinking about what would happen if they got hold of a child.”
The ex-doorman who has recently survived cancer, had been looking after the two pugs for his daughter, Kate, 20, because he was off work waiting for a hip operation.
He said: “My daughter is distraught, we are all traumatised. Gus was a beautiful dog.”
The attack happened just before 10.25pm on Saturday, April 22 in the Britannia Place area of Newcastle.
