Hunt explains no deal Brexit is now the only way forward as he demands PM gets more credit

Former Tory Leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt defended Boris Johnson’s attitude and decision making on Brexit. While on the BBC’s Today Programme Mr Hunt argued that Boris needs to deliver Brexit and if a no deal is the only way to do that, that is what may happen. He also defended his decision to remove the whip for Tory rebels citing that they stood on a platform that claimed a no deal Brexit was better than a bad deal.

Mr Hunt concluded that Boris needs to get more credit for his Brexit determination and should receive support from the entire party before an election.

On the Today Programme, Mr Hunt said: “Boris Johnson deserves great credit which I don’t think he gets.

“He deserves credit for the fact that for the first time in two years we are talking about getting a majority at a general election.

“That is very important when you look at the chaos of the Labour Party conference this week.

“But to win an election, indeed to get a deal through Parliament, indeed to get no deal, to weather the storms of no-deal you need a united party.

“That is why I think we need generosity on both sides from the Government in recognising that as a Conservative Party we have prospered when we have accepted that good Conservatives can have different views on Europe.”

The Today Programme host Mishal Hussain replied: “It is a bit too late for all of that.

“Boris Johnson decided to throw these people out though.

“He did it in a way that Theresa May did not do with those that were voting against her.”

Mr Hunt responded: “I don’t think it is too late.

“I think that there is a recognition even inside the government that this is a situation that needs to be resolved before we go into an election.

“But there also needs to be generosity from the 21 Tories themselves.

“They all stood on a platform the last election that said that no deal was better than a bad deal.

“They need to understand Boris Johnson has a mandate to take us out of the European Union.

“If a no-deal Brexit is the only way to do that, that may be what happens.”
