Kate Scott said mechanical failure on the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle service from Calais to Folkestone left passengers “very hot, hungry and tired”. An alarm was triggered on a shuttle carrying 100 vehicles.

Kate, husband Richard and children Charlie, 12, and Harriet, 10, had to abandon their car.

She described chaotic scenes on Tuesday as travellers with children and dogs walked along a service tunnel to a replacement train.

Kate, from Surrey, said they “needed to leave the car and our belongings” before walking to the train and arriving in Folkestone.

They finally drove their car off the original train almost eight hours after leaving Calais.

Kate said: “We were fine, just annoyed by the lack of communication.”

Eurotunnel apologised and said the fault was fixed, adding: “We will always put customer safety above everything.”
