Huge fire breaks out at scrapyard next to housing estate

A huge fire has erupted at a scrap metal yard as thick black smoke billows into the sky.

Residents near the European Metal Recycling site in Kingsbury, Warkshire, have been told to close their windows after the blaze broke out this morning.

Black plumes of smoke can be seen for miles around as up to 30 firefighters battle the blaze.

One witness was walking in nearby Kingsbury Water Park when he heard noises like a ‘shotgun’.

He said: ‘I walked to the other side of the park and I could still see the flames.

‘There were quite a few explosions that I heard and I was about a mile away.

‘They were akin to shotgun discharges, maybe a little louder, but it sounded lively.’

Firefighters issued a warning to a nearby housing estate, telling the locals to stay away.

They tweeted: ‘Large fire at European Metal Recycling in Trinity Road, Kingsbury.

‘Please keep windows shut and keep out of the area.

‘30 firefighters are currently in attendance at the large fire. We have been receiving lots of calls about this incident which is putting pressure on our call handlers.

‘Thank you to all those who have called in, but our crews are on scene.’

Another local, who lives in the housing estate, said: ‘There is a railway in between the houses and the scrap yard, so it should be okay.

‘I have heard seven sirens this morning and have heard a few bangs.’
