Some £10million will be spent on the pilot, which is designed to “help companies explore the benefits and sots of moving to a four-day working week”. Those on the scheme, which will initially focus on office-based jobs, will receive the same pay despite working one day less per week.

Campaigners are calling for a four-day working week to be established across Scotland, for all sectors of the economy.

A survey by IPPR Scotland found 80 percent of Scots think dropping to a four-day week, with no loss of pay, would have a “positive effect on their wellbeing”.

A whopping 88 percent would be prepared to participate in the scheme personally.

IPPR Scotland is urging the trial to be extended, so it covers non-office-based and shift-based work.

However, Express.co.uk readers questioned how the new programme will be paid for.

One wrote: “How will they pay for it? It better not be from Westminster and the English taxpayers!”

Another said: “The begging bowl will be out again to pay for it, “please Boris, can I have some more?”

A third warned: “No British company will want to invest in a Scottish business if this happens.

“They will have to give the extra day off in England, Wales and NI [Northern Ireland] as well. Has she [Sturgeon] thought this through or is it a ploy just to get more people to vote SNP?”

A fourth asked: “Well why stop there?

“If a 4 day week is good, what about a three or a two or even a one day week, or none at all?

“Then increase their benefits to cover the cost of all that free time.

“Only two problems, no one will be working so no services, like NHS, postal etc.

“And where are you going to fine the money to pay for all this, as no one will be paying tax? The madness of the SNP.”

Official Scottish government figures, released last month, showed Scotland’s deficit soared to £36.3billion during 2020-21.

This accounts for 22.4 percent of Scottish GDP, versus a substantially lower UK wide figure of 14.2 percent.

The Scottish Conservatives said the finding demonstrate the “strength and security” that comes with the Union.

A spokesman for the Scottish government said the trial will examine whether new working pattens could be needed, post coronavirus.

They said: “The pandemic has served to intensify interest in and support for more flexible working practices, which could include a shift to a four-day working week.

“Reductions in the working week might help sustain more and better jobs, and enhance wellbeing.

“We are in the early stages of designing a £10million pilot that will help companies explore the benefits and costs of moving to a four-day working week.

“The pilot will allow us to develop a better understanding of the implications of a broader shift to a shorter working week across the economy.”
