How to get across London on air-conditioned transport only

Phew. Today is officially the hottest July day ever in the UK – and you know where that fact becomes most aggressively apparent?

On the tube, of course, where we descend into the bowels of the earth just to get home to our hot houses.

Some lines are worse than others, such as the aptly named Bakerloo line, where you will find yourself getting baked into your seat.

Thankfully, there’s a way to make the commute slightly less bearable in the heat.

Transport app Citymapper have helpfully designed a feature which shows you the way to your destination only using services with air conditioning.

It might take you slightly longer, but if you can avoid hell’s waiting room then that’s a price we’re willing to pay.

To access the feature, you just use Citymapper as normal.

Type in your destination, and a list of potential routes you could take will come up.

Underneath the standard routes, a new section will appear called ‘With Air-con’.

It only works if there actually is an air-conditioned route to your destination, so unfortunately you may still be stuck if you’re trying to get somewhere more obscure.

The service is definitely helpful to find out if there’s a way you can stay in relative comfort on the tube home.

Unfortunately, the underground isn’t the best adapted to the heatwave.

Currently, the Circle, District, Metropolitan and Hammersmith & City lines are all air-conditioned, while the Overground is air-cooled.

Take those if you can.

These are the hottest lines on the London Underground

Bakerloo 31.04°C

Northern 27.98°C
