How the Queen reacted with HORROR to RISQUÉ pictures of Princess Diana
The beloved “People’s Princess” was one of the most famous and photographed women in the world in the Eighties and Nineties. Her fairytale wedding to Prince Charles remains to this day one of the most watched events in history. Even after their divorce, Diana’s unprecedented popularity continued both in Britain and abroad as her every move was meticulously documented and scrutinised.
However, in 2019 Sunday Night documentary “Royal Baby”, royal photographer Arthur Edwards expressed regret in taking some of the most intrusive pictures of the Princess, which reportedly infuriated Queen Elizabeth.
Mr Edwards recalled: “Charles and Diana were going off to the Bahamas on holiday and I said: ‘yes, let’s go!’
“We were of course hidden in the bushes and I got these pictures of Diana pregnant in a bikini on the beach with the Prince of Wales.
“They were intrusive pictures. There was a massive row here and in the House of Commons. There were questions asked.
“I probably wouldn’t do it again, not anymore.
“Well, also, now, Will would sue you.”
Royal correspondent Ingrid Seward said about the monarch’s reaction: “The Queen was very annoyed and horrified about this so she called a meeting at Buckingham Palace of all the editors of the national newspapers.
“She said: ‘you simply have to leave Princess of Wales alone’.
“I don’t think they listened.”
The pictures had been taken in February 1982 when the Princess of Wales was pregnant with Prince William.
She and Charles had been staying with guests and Lord and Lady Romsey at Countess Mountbatten’s cottage on Windermere Island, Bahamas.
It was not the first time the Queen actively intervened to protect the privacy of members of the Royal Family.
In 2009, The Daily Telegraph reported that Queen Elizabeth II finally “authorised a crackdown on the paparazzi” amid intrusions into the private lives of the blue bloods.
