On Sunday, February 6, the Queen spent the anniversary of her accession to the throne privately at her Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. But the Queen has since returned to Windsor to mark the start of her Platinum Jubilee year, returning to her royal duties as monarch.

After a few months out of the spotlight following health problems in the latter months of 2021, the Queen made a public appearance over the weekend in Norfolk.

On Saturday, the eve of the Queen’s Accession Day, the monarch hosted a small gathering at her Sandringham Estate to mark the Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen was pictured beaming while dressed in blue, as she spoke to members of the local community and cut a cake for guests.

And it appears the Queen will make more public appearances this year, as several engagements are planned for March 2022.

The Queen reportedly plans to attend a diplomatic reception at Windsor Castle on March 2.

The annual Commonwealth Service will also be held at Westminster Abbey on March 13, and the Queen is expected to attend with other members of the Royal Family.

A source told the PA news agency: “In addition, Her Majesty will be resuming her normal duties of audiences, credentials and privy council meetings, continuing to mix both virtual and in-person events.”

Poignantly, the Queen is also expected to attend a Service of Thanksgiving for Prince Philip on March 29 at Westminster Abbey.

News of the service was first announced in December by Buckingham Palace. A statement read: “The Queen has agreed that a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will take place in the spring of 2022 at Westminster Abbey.”

The Royal Family were devastated when Prince Philip died in April 2021, just a few months shy of what would have been his 100th birthday.

The Queen demonstrated her late husband of 73 years was still in her thoughts in her Platinum Jubilee message, in which she said she was “blessed” to have had Philip by her side throughout her reign.

The Queen said: “I am fortunate to have had the steadfast and loving support of my family.

“I was blessed that in Prince Philip, I had a partner willing to carry out the role of consort and unselfishly make the sacrifices that go with it.

“It is a role I saw my own mother perform during my father’s reign.”

The Service of Thanksgiving will provide an opportunity for the Queen and the Royal Family to reflect on the Duke’s life almost a year on from his death.

With Covid restrictions now eased in England, more people will also likely be able to attend the service, as only 30 people were permitted to attend Philip’s funeral during lockdown last year.
