How Princess Diana was left heartbroken by Prince Charles on their honeymoon

No sooner had the seemingly happy royal couple headed to Scotland after their wedding at St Paul’s Cathedral, than tensions began to surface between the newly- weds. Diana had become increasingly worried about the influence that Camilla still appeared to hold over her husband. And according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, Prince Charles left Diana heartbroken within days of their honeymoon, after wearing cuff links engraved with his and Camilla’s initials.

Speaking on the Channel 5 documentary Charles and Camilla: King and Queen in Waiting, Mr Fitzwilliams said: “Almost unbelievably Charles wore cuff links with the C and C, meaning Charles and Camilla.”

He went on to claim that Charles and Diana never had anything in common and at times seemed unable to talk to each other.

The Prince of Wales met Camilla Shand, as she was then known, at a polo match in Windsor in 1970.

They became lovers soon after, before splitting up when Charles joined the Royal Navy the following year.

The future Duchess of Cornwall went on to marry British Army lieutenant Andrew Parker Bowles.

The Prince of Wales, though, never managed to get over his love for Camilla and it appeared they stayed in touch.

Camilla’s hold over the future King of England became all too apparent to Diana well before her marriage.

Just days before she took her vows, she found a package containing a bracelet in the office of Charles’s private secretary Michael Colborne.

Demanding to see what it was, she discovered the letters G and F engraved on the jewellery.

The letters stood for Gladys and Fred and were the nicknames that Charles and Camilla used for each other.

Royal expert Jenny Bond described how this left the Princess of Wales shattered and angry.

She said: “She was enraged by it, she knew who it was for and wanted to know why he was giving this token to Camilla.”

Weeks before, Diana had found a bunch of flowers with the same initials signed on them.

With her marriage on the rocks, Diana devoted herself to bringing up her two children William and Harry.

She was determined to be a normal mother to her children and from the very start set about ditching royal protocol when it came to raising the two princes.

The princess did as much of the day-to-day child care as possible and made sure that William and Harry were always with her, even when she was on a royal tour.

Her attitude to parenting was frowned upon by Prince Charles and other members of the Royal Family.

On a trip to Balmoral, Diana decided to leave her nanny behind and looked after the children herself, which caused some consternation.

According to royal author Andrew Morton, the Queen reportedly said: “I don’t understand why Diana has to do this.

“There are millions of housemaids around.”

The princess ensured that William and Harry got to do the “normal things” that other children did.
