Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed their first baby together, a little girl, on September 18. But Beatrice and Edoardo waited almost a fortnight to announce their baby’s name as Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi.
What does Princess Beatrice’s baby name mean?
Beatrice and Edoardo’s name choice of Sienna has beautiful links to Italy, where Edoardo’s family is from.
According to babycentre, the meaning of the name Sienna stems “from the Italian city of Siena, which gave its name to a reddish shade of brown.”
And the choice of a name beginning with ‘S’ can be seen as a touching tribute to Beatrice’s mother, Sarah Ferguson.
Beatrice also decided to pay tribute to her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, with Sienna’s middle name.
By giving her daughter the middle name of Elizabeth, Beatrice has followed a common royal tradition of recent decades.
Many royal women hold the middle name of Elizabeth, including Princess Charlotte, Lady Louise Windsor, Zara Tindall, Princess Anne, Princess Beatrice and Lena Tindall.
Although Beatrice appeared to follow this royal tradition, her choice of baby name seems to deviate from a York family naming tradition.
How does baby Sienna’s name differ from York family names?
When Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, the Duke and Duchess of York, announced Princess Beatrice’s baby name in 1988, many were surprised by their unusual choice.
But the name Beatrice is actually a throwback to the Victorian era, as Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter was named Princess Beatrice.
The Duke and Duchess of York continued with Victorian-themed names with their second daughter, Princess Eugenie.

Eugenie’s first name draws comparisons to Queen Victoria’s granddaughter, Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg.
Princess Eugenie’s middle names of Victoria and Helena are also very Victorian, with Victoria of course being the same name as the famous Queen Victoria.
The middle name Helena also has sweet links to Queen Victoria’s third daughter, Princess Helena.
Princess Eugenie decided to carry on this York naming tradition when she welcomed her first child earlier this year.
Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed a son in February 2021.
Eugenie and Jack announced their baby’s name as August Philip Hawke Brooksbank.
The middle name Philip is a touching tribute to Eugenie’s grandfather, Prince Philip.
But the name August has links to Queen Victoria’s beloved husband Prince Albert, who held the name Augustus as one of his middle names.
