Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most shocking interviews ever given by members of the Royal Family. This week UK viewers heard Meghan and Harry discuss difficult issues such as their mental health while working as senior royals. The couple also discussed allegations of racism within the Royal Family before their son Archie was born, with Meghan claiming an unnamed member of the royal family raised “concerns and conversations” about her son’s skin colour.

How much did Harry and Meghan get paid for their Oprah interview?

Nothing – Harry and Meghan did not receive a fee for their interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Before the interview started, Oprah confirmed to viewers Meghan and Harry were not paid for their appearance.

Oprah said: “Before we get into it, I just want to make it clear to everybody that even though we’re neighbours… that there has not been an agreement.

“You don’t know what I’m going to ask, there is no subject that’s off-limits and you are not getting paid for this interview”.

Although Meghan and Harry were not paid for the interview, broadcasters have paid millions to get the rights to air the interview.

According to the Wall Street Journal, CBS paid a license fee between $7 million and $9 million (approximately £6.45 million) for the rights to air the much-anticipated interview.

ITV acquired the rights to show the interview on Monday night in the UK and the broadcaster reportedly paid a staggering £1million.

Oprah’s own production company, Harpo Productions, is thought to have benefitted from the deals.

How will Harry and Meghan make an income now?

Meghan and Harry have finally severed their ties to their former senior royal roles, confirming earlier this month they will not be returning to their previous positions as working royals.

Now the couple are free to pursue their own income as they will not be entitled to taxpayer funding.

Salman Haqqi, personal finance expert at money.co.uk, said: “Now the decision not to return to their positions as working members of the Royal Family has been made, the need for a steady income as private individuals will mean it’s down to business for Meghan and Harry.

“Maximising their celebrity to further causes close to their hearts, as well as increasing their commercial earnings to support their growing family, will be a focus for the couple as they continue building their new lives in California.”

Harry and Meghan have already signed lucrative deals with streaming services Netflix and Spotify.

In the interview with Oprah, Harry said this was “never the intention” but said the deals were needed to “pay for security”, after the couple had their taxpayer-funded security revoked in early 2020.

He said: “We’re certainly not complaining, our life is great now, we’ve got a beautiful house, I’ve got a beautiful family. The dogs are really happy.

“At the time during Covid, the suggestion by a friend was ‘what about streamers?’ and we hadn’t thought about it.

“There were all sorts of different options and from my perspective, I just needed enough money to pay for security to keep my family safe.”

Through their production company Archewell Audio, the Sussexes’ deal with Spotify is estimated to be worth $25million (approximately £17.9million).

Reports suggest the Sussexes deal with Netflix is worth an even higher sum.

Through their production company Archewell Productions, the Sussexes’ deal with Netflix is estimated to be around $100million (approximately £71.6million) or higher.
