How MPs reacted as Brexit Party romped to victory in European elections
Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage is today celebrating after stealing the night in the European elections.
The Tories were almost obliterated by the Brexit Party, winning less than nine per cent of the vote and holding on to just three seats in what was their worst election result since 1832.
But Farage’s insurgent party won in every region except London and picked up 28 seats.
He said: ‘Never before in British politics has a new party launched just six weeks ago topped the polls in a national election.
‘The reason of course is very obvious: we voted to leave in a referendum, we were supposed to do so on March 29 and we haven’t.
‘There’s a huge message here, massive message here – the Labour and Conservative parties could learn a big lesson from tonight – though I don’t suppose that they actually will.’
With leader Theresa May on the way out, the Conservatives lost 15 of their 18 seats, coming in fifth place behind the Green Party.
Foreign Secretary and Tory leadership hopeful Jeremy Hunt: ‘Yes, we knew it was coming but still a painful result.
‘Existential risk to our party unless we now come together and get Brexit done.’
Labour were also battered, losing eight of its 18 seats, as both the Liberal Democrats and the Greens benefitted by appealing to the Remain vote.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn: ‘With the Conservatives disintegrating and unable to govern, and parliament deadlocked, this issue will have to go back to the people, whether through a general election or a public vote.
‘Over the coming days we will have conversations across our party and movement, and reflect on these results on both sides of the Brexit divide.
‘We will not let the continuing chaos in the Conservative Party push our country into a No Deal exit from the EU.’
Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry added: ‘We should have said, quite simply, that any deal that comes out of this government should be put to a confirmatory referendum and that remain should be on the ballot paper and that Labour would campaign to remain.’
And Tottenham MP David Lammy said the party should hold a vote of members to decide its position on Brexit, but called for it to back a second referendum.
‘Labour should get its act together,’ he told BBC Radio 4’s Today. ‘We tried to ride two horses and what happened… is that we fell flat on our faces.’
The Lib Dems, who were reduced to just a single MEP in 2014, won 15 MEPs across the UK and topped the poll in London ahead of Labour.
Leader Sir Vince Cable said the party were ‘making gains around the country with some really impressive swings in many seats’.
He said it was ‘proof that the Lib Dems are the biggest, strongest voice of Remain’.
The Green Party won seven MEPs, including Britain’s coolest mayor Magid Magid.
Green Party MP Caroline Lucas said her party’s result showed Nigel Farage was wrong to say the Leave side had won the European election.
She told the Today programme: ‘I don’t think that’s right, I think the Brexit Party got about 35 per cent of the vote and the strongly Remain parties got about 40 per cent of the vote.
‘So either way you look at it the Brexit Party has got nothing like the 17 million they had before.
‘The point is let’s just try and rule out the kind of terrifying vision for this country of no deal, that literally should go.’
Change UK and Ukip failed to win a single seat in the elections – while Tommy Robinson blamed Facebook for his humiliating defeat.
Change UK leader Heidi Allen said: ‘The Brexit Party may well do well in this election tonight but they don’t have any MPs in the House of Commons.
‘It is MPs who hold the decision-making responsibility on what happens (on Brexit).
‘Twice already we have categorically voted down no-deal. There’s no way on earth no-deal will pass the House of Commons.’
Plaid Cymru equalled the single seat they won in 2014, while the SNP is forecast to win three MEPs in Scotland.
Last night, Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: ‘Outstanding results so far tonight for @theSNP – on course for our best ever Euro election result.
‘Polling way ahead of any other party. Higher % in Scotland than Brexit Party’s current share in UK.
‘Emphatically clear that Scotland doesn’t want Brexit.’
