How Meghan Markle’s baby is a lightweight in comparison to royal baby newborns

A beaming Prince Harry, 34, announced the safe arrival of his and Meghan’s royal baby boy to cameras in Windsor yesterday. Harry confirmed both his newborn son and mum Meghan Markle were doing “incredibly well” and described being present at the birth as “the most amazing experience.” Baby Sussex was born at 5.26am on Monday weighing 7lbs 3oz, making him considerably lighter than other royal newborns.

The average weight of a newborn baby in the UK is 7lb 7oz.

While Baby Sussex was only a touch lighter than average at birth, he was considerably smaller than some of his royal relatives.

Zara Tindall’s youngest daughter Lena broke the recent record for the heaviest royal newborn.

Lena weighed an impressive 9lb 3oz when she born last June.

Both Baby Sussex’s boy cousins Prince Louis and Prince George were also larger than average newborns.

When George was born in 2013, he weighed 8lb 6oz and was named the heaviest future king on record at the time.

George’s little brother Prince Louis topped that and weighed at 8lb 7oz when he was born.

All of the Duchess of Cambridge’s children weighed more than 8lb but less than 9lb at birth.

Before Zara Tindall’s daughter, Lena arrived it was Zara’s niece Savannah Phillips who held the record for the heaviest royal baby.

Savannah weighed 8lb 8oz when she was born in 2010.

While Meghan and Prince Harry’s baby boy is one of the lightest royal babies in recent years, they are still heavier than their dad was.

Baby Harry weighed just 6lb 14oz when he was born in 1984.

While Baby Sussex may be a little lighter than some other royal babies, Harry made it very clear that both the newborn and Meghan are safe and well.

In a gushing speech to journalists yesterday, an ecstatic Harry said: “Mother and baby are doing incredibly well.

“It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined.

“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension, but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there.

“It’s been amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

While royal watchers are eager to know the baby’s name, Harry said he and Meghan had not yet decided on one.

He said: “Still thinking about names.

“The baby is a little bit overdue, so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it.

“That’s the next bit, but for us I think we will be seeing you guys in probably two days’ time as planned as a family to be able to share it with you guys and so everyone can see the baby.”

Meghan is expected to make her first public appearance with the baby tomorrow.
