How Meghan gushes about Princess Diana – but has waited for Archie to visit her grave

Meghan Markle joined the Royal Family in 2018 when she married Prince Harry is a lavish ceremony held in Windsor. The couple welcomed a son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, into their family less than a year later. During the course of their relationship, they have overcome many hardships, including racist abuse of Meghan, allegations of overspending public money on refurbishments and most recently, backlash for using a private plane whilst encouraging others to act in the interests of climate change. Now reports have surfaced which reveal the Sussex family are due to make a trip to visit Princess Diana’s grave – but royal fans everywhere are shocked to learn it is her first time visiting her grave.

Princess Diana, the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, died aged 36 in 1997 after suffering a car crash in Paris as a result of her driver attempting to flee paparazzi.

Diana, named as the “People’s Princess” by the then-prime minister Tony Blair, was a national treasure, beloved around the world.

Her early and accidental death brought about a never before seen grief and mourning in the UK and around the world.

Her funeral, which was televised, was watched by a British audience of 32.1 million, one of the United Kingdom’s highest viewing figures ever, with millions more watched the event around the world.

Princess Diana’s grave is located in the middle of a lake at the Spencer family’s Althorp Estate, where she grew up and which now features 36 oak trees planted to signify each year of her life.

Reports reveal the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will visit the grave, with baby Archie, to mark the anniversary of her death on August 31.

A source told the Daily Mail: “Harry wants Meghan to see his mother’s resting place.”

This year will mark the 22nd anniversary of the beloved Princess’ death and Prince Harry has previously said he said he thinks his mum would have approved of Meghan, even saying the pair would have been “best friends”.

The Duchess previously spoke about Princess Diana during the couple’s formal engagement interview after Prince Harry had proposed with a custom-made ring featuring two diamonds from his mother’s jewellery collection.

She said at the time it ensured Diana is “with us on this crazy journey together”.

Meghan said: “Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of Princess Diana’s stones and obviously not being able to meet his mum.

“It’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us.”

Meanwhile, Prince Harry added: “I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, so excited for me.

“But then, as I said, [she] would’ve probably been best friends with Meghan.”

Earlier this month, the young couple clearly showed how important Princess Diana is to their lives when they made another touching tribute to Harry’s departed mother on their social media account.

The couple shared a famous quote spoken by Princess Diana as the first in their series of inspirational quotes.

The quote reads: “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”

The couple added: “Words have the power to inspire, which is why we’re happy to share some of our favourite quotes.

“From members of the public to public figures, from teachers and students to young leaders, we begin with a quote from Diana, Princess of Wales.”

The Sussex couple are also believed to have made either one or both of Princess Diana’s sisters godmother to baby Archie.

Her sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, were included in the family portrait taken and shared with the world at Windsor Castle after Archie’s christening last month.

Prince William and Prince Harry used to visit the Althorp Estate twice a year: once on their mother’s birthday and secondly on the anniversary of her death: July 1 and August 31 respectively.

According to the Daily Mail, Kate Middleton is believed to have visited for the first time in April 2011, days before their wedding ceremony.

Reportedly, it was very important to Prince William share the occasion with his mother before the wedding.

But Prince Harry did not choose to follow in his brother’s footsteps in this.

However, as the young royals have each settled down and been busiest with their day to day lives, it is not believed they have visited since 2017.

This visit was a celebration of what would have been Diana’s 56th birthday, where they attended a private ceremony led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

It would also have been the 20th anniversary of her death.

Meghan and Harry would have been dating for a year by that point, but it is possible she chose not to visit the grave because she was being considerate to her future husband and his need to be with his family for such a significant milestone.

As Prince Harry has not visited since 2017, it would be unlikely Meghan would have travelled to the grave alone.

However, it is possible that now she is a mother, she wishes to begin paying tribute to her departed mother-in-law, the grandmother Archie will sadly never meet.
