The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge was a show-stopper, with crowds lining the streets of London and millions more watching the ceremony on TV. Before the couple became two of the Royal Family’s most famous and popular members, Kate had been William’s university girlfriend while they studied at St Andrew’s in Scotland. Kate is incredibly close to the Middleton family, which includes parents Carole Middleton and Michael Middleton, and siblings Pippa Middleton and James Middleton. And on her wedding day, the future Queen made sure to pay tribute to her mum with a series of adorable gestures.
The Goring Hotel
On her last day as a single woman, it appeared Kate most wanted to spend time with her beloved mum and family.
Kate, Carole and sister Pippa Middleton checked into the Goring Hotel in Belgravia the day before Kate’s whirlwind royal wedding.
The Middleton family were all smiles as they waved to crowds, and Kate showed no sign of nerves in the run-up to her big day.
The earrings
Rather than wear a pair of earrings from the Queen’s extensive jewellery collection, Kate opted for dangling diamond earrings gifted from her family for her big day.
The Royal Collection Trust described the earrings’ design as “stylised oak leaves with a pear-shaped diamond set drop and pave set diamond acorn suspended in the centre”.
The earrings, designed by Robinson Pelham, featured an acorn for a thoughtful reason.
The Royal Family explained around the time of Kate and William’s wedding: “Inspiration for the design comes from the Middleton family’s new coat of arms, which includes acorns and oak leaves. The earrings were made to echo the tiara.”
Kate’s earrings were part of a suite of jewellery created by Robinson Pelham for the Middleton family, as maid of honour Pippa Middleton also wore a pair of floral diamond earrings designed by the jewellery brand.
The father of the bride Michael Middleton and son James Middleton also wore gold acorn stick pins for the ceremony.
Poignantly, Carole Middleton also wore a tourmaline and diamond pendant with matching earrings as she watched her eldest walk down the aisle.

The bridesmaids’ dresses
Kate had several bridesmaids for her 2011 wedding, including William’s cousin Lady Louise Windsor.
The bridesmaids wore white dresses with cream sashes for the occasion, accessorised with dainty floral crowns which held a special link to Kate’s mother.
According to HELLO!, the bridesmaids’ flower crowns were reportedly modelled on the headpiece Carole Middleton wore when she married Michael Middleton in 1980.
